Yip Harburg (born Isidore Hochberg) was an American popular song lyricist and
librettist from New York City, born on April 8, 1896. Harburg attended Townsend
Harris High School, where he met lifelong collaborator Ira Gershwin. In 1932,
Harburg wrote the lyrics for “Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?”, which became a
defining anthem of the Great Depression. In Hollywood, Harburg collaborated with
composers including Harold Arlen and Jerome Kern. He wrote the lyrics for the
