Vjekoslav Šutej was born on July 31, 1951, and was a Croatian orchestral
conductor. He studied conducting under Igor Gjadrov at the Zagreb Music Academy
before obtaining his Master of Music degree in Rome with Franco Ferrara. From
1979 to 1989, Šutej served as art director and chief conductor at the Croatian
National Theatre in Split. He conducted opera productions such as Eugene Onegin
and Rigoletto during his tenure as music director of La Fenice opera house in
