The Vienna Art Orchestra, a jazz group based in Vienna, Austria, was founded in
1977 by Mathias Rüegg. The ensemble's size varied from big band to smaller
formations and included notable members such as saxophonists Wolfgang Puschnig
and Harry Sokal, and tubist Jon Sass. Their debut album Jessas Na! was released
in 1979. Throughout the 1980s, they released several albums including Tango From
Obango (1980) and The Minimalism of Erik Satie (1984). The group disbanded
briefly at the end of the decade but reformed in 1992 with a reduced lineup.
