Today was formed in 1988 by Frederick Lee “Bubba” Drakeford, Larry “Chief”
Singletary, Wesley “Wes” Adams, and Larry “Love” McCain, childhood friends from
Englewood, New Jersey. Their early collaboration began as the Gents in 1984, but
after meeting producer Teddy Riley at an anti‑drug benefit, the group was
renamed Today and signed to MCA Records. Their debut studio album Today (1988)
yielded the R&B hit "Him or Me" (U.S. R&B Number 3) and the chart‑topping single
