Catherine Tift Merritt, born January 8 1975 in Houston, Texas, is an American
singer‑songwriter and multi‑instrumentalist. She studied creative writing at the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill while performing with the Carbines,
releasing the 7‑inch single "Jukejoint Girl" and the EP The Two Dollar Pistols
with Tift Merritt in 1999 on Yep Roc. Tift Merritt’s debut album Bramble Rose
(2002) earned top‑ten reviews, and her sophomore release Tambourine (2004) was
