Thurston Joseph Moore was born on 25 July 1958 in Coral Gables, Florida, and
grew up in Bethel, Connecticut, where he first heard "Louie Louie" at age five
and bought his first electric guitar. After a brief stint at Western Connecticut
State University, he moved to New York City in 1976, immersing himself in the
post‑punk and no‑wave scenes and meeting future Sonic Youth bandmate
Lee Ranaldo. Together they formed Sonic Youth in 1981, and the duo’s debut album
