At eighteen, he formed his first trio. In 1987, after completing his music studies, Wagner became active in the Frankfurt jazz scene, collaborating with artists like Gustl Mayer. Throughout the 1990s, he toured extensively with notable figures such as Scott Hamilton and Benny Waters.
