Ted Gioia (born October 21, 1957) is an American jazz critic, music historian,
writer, and jazz pianist from Hawthorne, California. Gioia earned degrees from
Stanford University and the University of Oxford, and an MBA from the Stanford
Graduate School of Business. After working for firms including the Boston
Consulting Group and McKinsey & Company, Gioia founded the jazz studies program
at Stanford University. Gioia released his debut album, The End of the Open
