Sydney Bertram Carter, born on May 6, 1915 in Camden Town, London, was an
English poet, songwriter, and folk musician. He graduated from Balliol College,
Oxford in 1936. Carter began his music career as a lyricist for Donald Swann’s
revues and musicals in the 1950s. His breakthrough came with the song "Lord of
the Dance" (1963), based on the Shaker song "Simple Gifts". He released notable
albums such as At Eton (1967) and And Now It is So Early (1972). Carter's songs
