Svein “Chrico” Christiansen, born on August 6, 1941, in Kolbotn, Norway, was a
Norwegian jazz musician and percussionist who played a central role in the Oslo
jazz scene. After early piano lessons, he joined the school orchestra, then
played with the Hot Saints from 1958 to 1960, before moving into Oslo’s big‑band
scene with the Veitvet Music School and Oddvar Paulsen’s quartet, winning the
1963 national amateur jazz championship. He became a professional in 1967,
performing with Karin Krog, Helge Hurum’s big band, and recording with Einar
