Stanley Robinson, known as Substantial, was born on January 7, 1979, in Prince George's County, Maryland. He began his career collaborating with Japanese hip-hop producer Nujabes (Seba Jun) and signing to Hyde Out Productions. His debut album To This Union A Sun Was Born was released in 2001 and became a top 10 hit in Japan.
