Soweto is a Brazilian pagode ensemble formed in 1991 in the Itaquera
neighborhood of São Paulo. Originally named Sob Medida (after earlier
incarnations such as Nó na Madeira), the group adopted its current name as a
tribute to a Djavan song and a bar owned by Claudinho de Oliveira referencing
the South African township of the same name. Their recording career began with
the independent release of Vento Dos Areais (1995). After signing with EMI, they
achieved national success with Refém Do Coração (1997), despite the tragic death
of founder Robson Buiú shortly before its release. ...
