Sixpence None the Richer's odd name comes from a line in a C.S. Lewis book called Mere Christianity which featured the ideals of the band's two central figures Leigh Nash and Matt Slocum as a Christian rock band. They originally met in the early 1990s while attending the same church in New Braunfels, Texas and Matt Slocum - who was playing with another Christian rock band Love Coma - suggested they work on some demos together.
