Sergio Ortega
Sergio Ernesto Haroldo Ortega Alvarado, known as Sergio Ortega, born on February
2, 1938, in Antofagasta, was a Chilean composer and pianist. He composed some of
the seminal works of the movement known as Nueva Canción Chilena (New Chilean
Song, which blended traditional musical styles with socially conscious themes.
His body of work includes songs, cantatas, operas, poems, and film scores. Among
his best-known compositions are the songs "El pueblo unido jamás será vencido"
and "Venceremos", as well as the cantatas "Fulgor y muerte de Joaquín Murieta"
