Ross Tompkins, born on May 13, 1938, in Detroit, Michigan, was an American jazz
pianist. He attended the New England Conservatory of Music before moving to New
York City, where he began his professional career working with notable musicians
such as Kai Winding and Eric Dolphy. In 1971, Tompkins relocated to Los Angeles
and joined The Tonight Show Band led by Doc Severinsen on The Tonight Show
Starring Johnny Carson, a role he maintained until Carson's retirement in 1992.
