Romano Gandolfi was an Italian choral and orchestral conductor. Drawn to music
from childhood through his mother’s involvement in a local church choir, he
studied at the Conservatorio Arrigo Boito di Parma and later trained in choral
conducting under Roberto Benaglio. In the late 1960s he became principal
conductor of the choir of the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, and in the 1970s
returned to La Scala in Milan at the invitation of Claudio Abbado, remaining
there until 1983 before becoming director of the choir of the Gran Teatre del
