Richard Berry Jr., born April 11, 1935, in Extension, Louisiana, was an American singer-songwriter and musician. He moved to Los Angeles and performed with doo-wop groups like the Flairs and the Robins in the 1950s. Berry's breakthrough came with "Louie Louie", a calypso-style song he wrote and recorded with the Pharaohs in 1957. The Kingsmen's cover in 1963 made it one of the most recorded songs ever, though Berry saw little financial gain until the mid-1980s.
