Phạm Duy Cẩn, known professionally as Phạm Duy, was a Vietnamese songwriter. He
began his musical career performing with the Đức Huy musical troupe in 1943–44
and later joined the Viet Minh during their resistance against the French. He
became friends with musician Văn Cao during his time with the group and they
collaborated on some of their earliest songs together. He left the Viet Minh in
May 1951 and moved to Saigon. After the fall of the Republic of Vietnam in
1975, Phạm Duy moved to the United States, settling in Midway City, California.
