Mitchell Joseph Torok, born in Houston, Texas, on 28 October 1929, is an American country singer-songwriter, guitarist, artist and author. He began playing guitar at 12 and studied art at Stephen F. Austin State University while playing collegiate baseball. He gained a number 8 hit with "Hootchy Kootchy Henry (from Hawaii)" in 1953. He also wrote"Mexican Joe" (1953), a composition that catapulted Jim Reeves to stardom; the same year he issued "Caribbean", which stayed on the country chart for 24 weeks and peaked at number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1959.
