Michael Louis Diamond, known professionally as Mike D, was born on November 20,
1965, in New York City. He began his career as the drummer in the hardcore punk
group the Young Aborigines in 1979, which evolved into the Beastie Boys in 1981
alongside Adam “MCA” Yauch, John Berry, and Kate Schellenbach. The group issued
the punk EP Polly Wog Stew in 1982 before “Cooky Puss” signaled its transition
toward hip-hop in 1983. After Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz joined the lineup, the
Beastie Boys supported Madonna’s Virgin Tour in 1985 and released Licensed to
