Michael Stern
Michael Stern, born 17 December 1959, is an American conductor and the son of
violinist Isaac Stern. He earned a degree in American history from Harvard
College in 1981 and studied conducting at the Curtis Institute under Max Rudolf,
graduating in 1986. Stern began as assistant conductor with The Cleveland
Orchestra (1986‑1991) and debuted with the New York Philharmonic in 1986 under
Leonard Bernstein. He led the Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester Saarbrücken
(1996‑2000), recording works by Henry Cowell and Charles Ives. In 2000, he
