Michael Scott Smith, known professionally as Michael Smith, was born on January
30, 1946, and was an American percussionist and jazz drummer. Smith transferred
to Howard University in Washington, D.C., where he launched his music career. He
performed with jazz pianist Bobby Timmons at the Bohemian Caverns jazz club and
subsequently gained attention from prominent jazz musicians such as vibraphonist
Gary Burton. Smith joined his friend, bassist Terry Plumeri, in the
free-improvisation group Love, Cry, Want, which blended elements of jazz, blues,
