Julian Clifton Matlock, known professionally as Matty Matlock, was born on April
27, 1907, in Paducah, Kentucky. He began playing the clarinet at age 12 and
replaced Benny Goodman in Ben Pollack's jazz band from 1929 to 1934, where he
contributed arrangements and played the clarinet. In 1935, he joined Bob
Crosby's group as a clarinettist and primary arranger, also working with the
Bobcats until 1942. After Crosby's group disbanded, he worked on various
Dixieland recordings in Los Angeles. He played the clarinet for a band in the
