Mathieu Hubert Wijnandts Schwarts, known professionally as Mat Mathews, was a
Dutch jazz accordionist born on June 18, 1924, in The Hague, Netherlands.
Inspired by a post-World War II radio broadcast featuring Joe Mooney, he decided
to play jazz and performed with The Millers in the late 1940s. He emigrated to
the United States in 1952, forming a group that included Herbie Mann and Julius
Watkins. Notable releases under his leadership included The Modern Art of Jazz
