Mark L. Schatz, born on April 23, 1955 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is an
American bassist, banjoist, mandolinist, guitarist, clogger and hambone
performer who grew up in Lexington, Massachusetts. He studied music theory and
composition at Haverford College from 1973 to 1978 and later at the Berklee
College of Music in Boston. Schatz relocated to Nashville, Tennessee in 1983. He
has collaborated with numerous artists including Bela Fleck, Nickel Creek, Jerry
