Marcio Mattos, born on March 20, 1946, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is a bassist
and cellist of free improvisational music. He began playing acoustic guitar as a
teenager before switching to double bass, inspired by jazz. While studying at
the Instituto Villa-Lobos in Rio de Janeiro, Mattos focused on improvisation and
electronic music. In 1970, he moved to Britain, collaborating with artists such
as John Surman, John Stevens, and Keith Tippett. He recorded with the
