Luis Ortiz, born 26 December 1949 in San Juan, known as “Perico”, is a Puerto
Rican salsa musician, composer, and producer. He studied at the Escuela Libre de
Música Puerto Rico and the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico, later earning a
bachelor's degree from the University of Puerto Rico. In 1967, Ortiz performed
as a guest soloist with the Puerto Rican Symphony Orchestra. Moving to New York
City in 1970, he established a reputation performing with Tito Puente, Mongo
