Luis Aguilar Manzo was a Mexican ranchera singer and actor born on January 29,
1918, in Hermosillo. Following military studies and service, he worked in the
fishing industry until director Raúl de Anda encouraged him to begin a film
career. Aguilar performed his debut at age 24 in the 1942 film Soy puro
mexicano. He received his first leading role in Sota, caballo y rey in 1944. His
role in the 1948 film El Gallo giro resulted in his nickname “El Gallo Giro”.
