Louise Simone Bennett‑Coverley, known as Miss Lou, was born on
September 7, 1919, in Kingston, Jamaica. She was a poet, folklorist, actress,
writer, and educator who played a pivotal role in preserving Jamaican Patois
through her literary and performance work. Bennett’s poetry was first published
in the Sunday Gleaner in 1943. In 1957, she released Children’s Jamaican Songs
and Games. Over her career, she recorded albums such as Jamaican Folk Songs and
