Lou Reid
Louis Reid Pyrtle, born September 13, 1954 in Union Grove, North Carolina, is a
bluegrass singer and musician who led the Seldom Scene. Raised on a farm, he
first played acoustic bass with the Bluegrass Buddies before joining Southbound,
where he recorded one album for Rebel Records in 1977. In 1979, he joined Doyle
Lawson and Quicksilver. From 1982 to 1986, he performed with the Ricky Skaggs
Band, then replaced Phil Rosenthal as lead singer of the Seldom Scene in 1986,
recording Scenic Roots (1990) and Scene 20: 20th Anniversary Concert (1992). He
