Lee Elhardt Hays, born on March 14, 1914 in Little Rock, Arkansas, was an
American folk singer and songwriter. Influenced by his uncle Vance Randolph, a
folklorist, Hays developed an early interest in folk music. In the 1930s, he
became involved in social activism and labor movements. He is best known for his
work with The Weavers, where he sang bass and contributed to hits such as
"Lonesome Traveller", "Wasn't That a Time?", "If I Had a Hammer" and "Kisses
Sweeter than Wine". Hays also familiarized audiences with songs of the 1930s
labor movement, such as "We Shall Not Be Moved"...
