Laima Vaikule, born March 31, 1954, in Cēsis, Soviet Latvia, is a Latvian
actress and singer. She began her musical journey at age 12 by participating in
a competition for young singers. In the 1980s, she studied acting and directing
at Moscow State Institute for Theatrical Arts. Vaikule's breakthrough came in
1985 with her first hit in the Soviet Union. She collaborated extensively with
Latvian composer Raimonds Pauls and Russian poet Ilya Reznik, producing hits
