Kirk Nurock, born February 28, 1948, in Camden, New Jersey, is an American
pianist and composer. At 16, he received the first Duke Ellington Scholarship
from the Eastman School of Music. Nurock studied composition at Juilliard and
jazz with Johnny Richards, Rayburn Wright, and Manny Albam. His debut album Kirk
Nurock was released in 1976. Nurock was also known for integrating animal sounds
into compositions like "The Bronx Zoo Events" (1980) and "Sonata for Piano and
