Kippie Moeketsi
Jeremiah “Kippie” Morolong Moeketsi, born 27 July 1925 in Johannesburg, South
Africa, was an alto saxophonist. He began playing clarinet at 20 before
switching to saxophone, joining shebeen groups such as the Band in Blue and
later the Jazz Epistles, where he collaborated with Abdullah Ibrahim, Jonas
Gwangwa, and Hugh Masekela. In 1973, he released Dollar Brand + 3, followed by
Blue Stompin' in 1977. He died on 27 April 1983. Moeketsi’s influence was
acknowledged by contemporaries and later by a bronze sculpture unveiled in 2009,
and the Newtown jazz club Kippies was named after ...
