Karol Stryja was a Polish conductor and teacher who was born in Cieszyn,
Austria-Hungary, in 1915. He achieved early professional recognition in 1937
leading the Echo choir and is famous for his long tenure as the artistic
director of the Silesian Philharmonic and for founding prestigious international
music competitions. Stryja served as the artistic director of the Silesian
Philharmonic in Katowice starting in 1953 and held the same position at the
