Joya Sherrill, born on August 20, 1924, in Bayonne, New Jersey, was an American
jazz vocalist and children's television show host. Initially aspiring to be a
writer, she began her music career with Duke Ellington's orchestra in July 1942
at the age of 17. After a period at Wilberforce University, Sherrill rejoined
Ellington in 1944 and remained until 1946. She continued to collaborate with
Ellington on various projects, including the television broadcast A Drum is a
