Joseph Spence, born on August 3, 1910 in Andros, Bahamas, was a Bahamian
guitarist and singer. He received first guitar at nine and began performing
locally at 14, developing a distinctive “rhyming” technique. In 1958, Folkways
recorded his early work, releasing his album Bahaman Folk Guitar - Music Of The
Bahamas - Volume One in 1959. Spence released his third album, Good Morning Mr.
Walker, issued by Arhoolie Records, in 1972. He toured the United States,
appeared at Newport Folk Festival, collaborated with Taj Mahal and Grateful
Dead. Spence died on March 18, 1984.
