Jonathan Segel is an American composer and multi-instrumentalist. He studied
music at the University of California, Santa Cruz under Peter Elsea and Gordon
Mumma, and later earned a master’s degree in music composition from Mills
College, studying with Fred Frith, Pauline Oliveros, Alvin Curran, and Joëlle
Léandre. He began his musical career as a violinist with indie rock group Camper
Van Beethoven in 1984, contributing to the band’s distinctive sound until
leaving in 1989 due to personality conflicts; he returned for the group’s 1999
