Johnny Long, born on September 12, 1914 in Newell, North Carolina, was an
American violinist and bandleader. He formed The Duke Collegians at Duke
University, later renamed the Johnny Long Orchestra. The band signed with
Vocalion in 1937 and released "Just Like That". Long's 1941 hit "In a Shanty in
Old Shanty Town" earned a gold disc; he also performed "Back Up the Red, White
and Blue with God" and accompanied Ella Fitzgerald on "Confessin' That I Love
You". Long died on October 31, 1972.
