Johnny Dodds was an American jazz clarinetist and alto saxophonist born on April 12, 1892 in New Orleans. Dodds achieved professional recognition for a career that began after he played a toy flute and studied the clarinet under the musician Lorenzo Tio Jr. and the musician Charlie McCurdy. He achieved professional recognition for joining the ensemble Joe "King" Oliver's Creole Jazz Band and recording with the group in 1923.
