John Lanchbery
John Arthur Lanchbery was born on May 15, 1923, in London. He was an English
conductor and composer who was famous for his ballet arrangements and for his
ballet adaptations of canonical works. He began violin lessons and music
composition at age eight and studied under Sir Henry Wood at the Royal Academy
of Music after receiving a scholarship in 1942. His career started with
conducting roles at the Metropolitan Ballet and Sadler's Wells Theatre Ballet
from 1948 to 1959, where he orchestrated notable ballets such as Somnambulism.
