John Jacob Niles, born on April 28, 1892 in Louisville, Kentucky, was a composer, singer, and collector of traditional ballads. He learned music theory from his mother and began transcribing folk songs as a teenager while working for the Burroughs Corporation. After serving in World War I, Niles studied music in France and Cincinnati before moving to New York City in 1925. His notable works include "Venezuela" and "I Wonder as I Wander".
