John Curtis Gross is an American jazz saxophonist, clarinetist, and flautist
born on May 30, 1944, in Burbank, California. He began his professional career
at age eight with the L.A. County Parks and Recreation Youth Orchestra. At age
16, Gross left university to tour with Harry James. During the 1960s, he
performed with Lionel Hampton, Johnny Mathis, and Stan Kenton. Between 1967 and
1972, he served in the house band at the Hollywood club Shelly’s Manne-Hole.
