John Carewe
John Carewe, born on January 24, 1933, is a British conductor and teacher. He
shifted from composition to conducting during his studies at the Guildhall
School of Music. After training under Walter Goehr, Max Deutsch, Olivier
Messiaen, and Pierre Boulez, he founded the New Music Ensemble in 1958,
premiering works by John Birtwistle, Pierre Boulez, and Maxwell Davies. He
served as principal conductor of the BBC Welsh Orchestra from 1966 to 1971 and
music director of the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra from 1974 to 1986, later
