Edward Chester Babcock, known professionally as Jimmy Van Heusen, was born on
January 26, 1913, in Syracuse, New York, and was a composer. He began writing
music while in high school and adopted the name Jimmy Van Heusen at age 16. In
1940, he teamed up with lyricist Johnny Burke, winning an Academy Award for Best
Original Song for "Swinging on a Star" from Going My Way in 1944. Van Heusen
later collaborated with Sammy Cahn, winning three more Oscars for "All the Way"
(1957), "High Hopes" (1959), and "Call Me Irresponsible" (1963). His
