James Clayton Day, known as “Jimmy Day”, was an American steel guitarist born on
January 9, 1934, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Following his 1951 high school
graduation, Day joined the house band of the radio show Louisiana Hayride. He
provided musical accompaniment for developing artists including Hank Williams
and Elvis Presley. His first recording session occurred in 1952 for the Webb
Pierce song “That Heart Belongs to Me”. Day moved to Nashville in 1955 to work
as a session player, performing on tracks such as Ray Price’s “Crazy Arms” and
