James Dexter Weatherly, professionally known as Jim Weatherly, was an American singer-songwriter who was born on March 17, 1943, in Pontotoc, Mississippi. He began his career as an all-star quarterback at Pontotoc High School and later played for the University of Mississippi before choosing a career in music over football. His songwriting gained prominence when Gladys Knight & the Pips recorded “Midnight Train to Georgia” (1973), which peaked at Number 1 on both the pop and R&B charts and won a Grammy Award.
