Jero (real name: Jerome Charles White Jr.) is an American-born enka singer known
for being the first Black enka artist. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in
1981, he was raised with a strong connection to Japan through his Japanese
grandmother, who introduced him to Enka music. After moving to Japan in his
teens for a speech contest, Jero became fascinated by Enka. His journey to
becoming a singer included studying at Pittsburgh University and a brief stay at
