Jay Clayton, born Judith Theresa Colantone on October 28, 1941, in Youngstown,
was an American avant-garde jazz vocalist and educator. After studying music
education, she became associated with New York City's free jazz scene during the
1960s. Clayton released her first album as a leader, All-Out, in 1981, followed
by Sound Songs in 1986. Her later recordings included As Tears Go By, released
with John Lindberg in 1988, and Alone Together, a collaboration with Jerry
