Herbert Bernfeld, known professionally as Herbie Fields, was an American jazz
saxophonist and musician born on May 24, 1919. He attended New York's Juilliard
School of Music from 1936 to 1938 and served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1943,
leading a swing band during his service. Fields began recording in 1944 with Bob
Thiele's Signature label and later recorded for Savoy Records, notably featuring
teenaged Miles Davis on one of his sessions. In 1945, he won Esquire magazine's
New Star Award on the Alto Sax. RCA Victor signed him as leader of his own big
